Une quarantaine de musées en France, dont le Grand Palais, ont été victimes d’une attaque par ransomware dans la nuit du 3 au 4 août, a appris l’AFP de source policière. Les pirates informatiques auraient visé un système informatique commun aux établissements, qui centralise toutes les données financières, pour ensuite réclamer une rançon en cryptomonnaies. En cas de non-paiement de la rançon, ils menacent de diffuser ces données sous 48 heures.

La liste des établissements culturels concernés n’est pour l’heure pas connue. Le Louvre, qui avait été annoncé comme étant touché, a finalement démenti. Le DSI du site du Grand Palais a alerté les enquêteurs de la brigade de lutte contre la cybercriminalité (BL2C) de la police judiciaire de Paris. Une enquête a été ouverte pour “atteinte à un système automatisé de traitement des données, extorsion en bande organisée et association de malfaiteurs en vue de commettre un crime ou un délit punis de cinq ans d’emprisonnement”. D’après l’Agence nationale de sécurité des systèmes d’information (Anssi), l’incident, qui était toujours en cours hier soir, ne touche pas les systèmes d’information impliqués dans le déroulement des Jeux Olympiques – les épreuves d’escrime ayant lieu au Grand Palais.

La semaine dernière, le Premier ministre Gabriel Attal a indiqué que 68 cyberattaques avaient été déjouées depuis le début des Jeux Olympiques, dont une à Bercy et une autre à la Villette, où est installé le Club France. L’Anssi ajoutait qu’il s’agissait principalement d’attaques “de basse intensité, de type déni de service distribué (DDoS)”. De manière générale, les établissements culturels ne sont pas les plus visés par des attaques informatiques. Un ransomware avait toutefois contraint le musée d’Ottawa (Canada) à fermer ses portes l’année dernière. En janvier, Gallery Systems, fournisseur de logiciel de gestion de collections pour les institutions culturelles, avait aussi été visé par une attaque de ransomware. Plusieurs musées américains avaient alors été touchés.

Le propriétaire du réseau social X (ex-Twitter) accuse les annonceurs d'avoir fui sa plateforme.

“Nous avons été gentils pendant deux ans et n’avons obtenu que des paroles en l’air. Maintenant, c’est la guerre” : dans un message cinglant publié le 6 août sur son réseau X (ex-Twitter), Elon Musk dénonce les pratiques des annonceurs présents sur sa plateforme. Il leur reproche d’avoir déserté illégalement le réseau social depuis son rachat en octobre 2022. Bien qu'il se décrive à tout bout de champ comme un chantre de la liberté d'expression, Musk semble en effet penser que ces entreprises se doivent d'être ses clients.

**Les Annonceurs Accusés De Priver X De "milliards De Dollars De Recettes"**

X a porté plainte devant un tribunal fédéral du Texas contre la Fédération mondiale des annonceurs (WFA) ainsi que plusieurs entreprises dont la multinationale anglo-néerlandaise Unilever, le géant américain de l’agroalimentaire Mars, la chaîne de pharmacies CVS Health et Ørsted, l’une des principales entreprises danoises de l’énergie.

Dans la plainte déposée par X, la WFA est accusée, via son initiative Global Alliance for Responsible Media (GARM), d’avoir usé de pratiques antitrust pour “collectivement priver de milliards de dollars de recettes publicitaires” le réseau social. Il demande des dommages et intérêts d'un montant non-spécifié.

Cette initiative GARM a été créée en 2019 par la WFA pour aider le secteur publicitaire à agir face aux contenus illégaux ou offensants sur les réseaux sociaux. Dans sa plainte, X (ex-Twitter) assure qu’il a appliqué des normes de sécurité comparables à celles de ses concurrents, qui respectent ou dépassent les directives fixées par la GARM.

**Insultes, Dérapages à Répétition, Désinformation Et Théories Du Complot**

Pourtant, depuis le rachat de la plateforme par Elon Musk, les digues de modération semblent avoir cédé. Les discours haineux se sont multipliés, sans blocage, et des milliers de comptes bannis sont réapparus. Si les grands annonceurs ont pour beaucoup quitté la plateforme, c'est donc tout simplement parce qu'ils craignaient de voir leurs publicités côtoyer des contenus problématiques ou offensants.

En janvier, eSafety, régulateur australien de la sécurité en ligne, a d'ailleurs révélé que X (ex-Twitter) avait licencié plus de 1200 employés… chargés de la lutte contre les contenus abusifs. Twitter était déjà un mauvais élève en la matière avant le rachat, et cette élimination pure et simple des équipes n'a évidemment rien arrangé. La Commission européenne a ouvert en fin d’année dernière une enquête contre le réseau social pour violation du DSA, en particulier sur ses actions de lutte contre les contenus illégaux et la désinformation.

Elon Musk avait provoqué le départ d’autres annonceurs en novembre, après avoir apporté son soutien à une théorie du complot antisémite sur son réseau social. Le milliardaire s’était excusé, mais avait tenu un tout autre discours vis-à-vis des annonceurs ayant suspendu leurs publicités : il les avait accusés de lui “faire du chantage”, avant de leur déclarer lors d'une conférence filmée “Allez-vous faire foutre. Est-ce que c’est clair ?”.

La parole du milliardaire s'est encore plus libérée depuis, et il affiche désormais ouvertement des idées d'extrême droite. Il avait par exemple qualifié les médias américains de "racistes anti-blancs" l'année dernière, lorsque ceux-ci avaient décidé d'arrêter la publication d'une bande dessinée dont l'auteur avait comparé la population noire à un "groupe de haine". Invité à un rassemblement politique d'extrême droite en Italie quelques mois plus tard, organisé par le parti de Giorgia Meloni, le milliardaire avait attribué au "virus woke" le départ de ses annonceurs, avant de soutenir la théorie du grand remplacement.

**Une Santé Financière Inquiétante**

L’action en justice serait-elle un moyen pour le milliardaire américain de sauver les finances de sa plateforme ? Au deuxième trimestre, le réseau social a réalisé un chiffre d’affaires de 114 millions de dollars (104 millions d’euros), en baisse de 25% par rapport au premier semestre et de 53% par rapport au deuxième trimestre 2023. Le gestionnaire de fonds Fidelity, qui avait injecté 19,2 millions de dollars dans Twitter au moment du rachat, a dévalué son investissement de 71,5%.

Musk comptait à l'origine sur une stratégie d'abonnement payant pour s'émanciper des annonceurs en changeant de business model. Il a pour ce faire détruit le système de vérification de comptes existant pour le remplacer par des comptes payants disposant de plus de visibilité et de fonctionnalités supplémentaires. Cela s'est traduit par une explosion du spam automatisé (que Musk avait pourtant promis de faire disparaître) et de campagnes de désinformation, mais sans générer beaucoup de revenus au final, la majorité des utilisateurs continuant d'utiliser le site gratuitement.

Elon Musk envisage désormais de rendre la plateforme payante pour tous les utilisateurs, sur la base d’un abonnement annuel d’un dollar par an. Cette formule est actuellement expérimentée en Nouvelle-Zélande et aux Philippines.

***ENHANCING SMART CITIES: NEW METHOD FOR ACCURATE 3D SENSOR NETWORK MONITORING***

Smart cities are crucial for sustainable urban development as they manage growing populations through advanced sensor networks and digital communication systems. Smart monitoring, a key service in these cities, oversees both indoor and outdoor environments. For example, it can enhance road safety for autonomous vehicles by predicting and alerting them about potential accidents at intersections. Indoors, it supports vulnerable individuals by automatically notifying authorities during emergencies.

Cameras and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensors are commonly used for smart monitoring. LiDAR sensors provide three-dimensional (3D) visual information without colors. Since LiDAR relies on laser reflections, a blind spot is left behind objects, making it difficult to detect all areas for monitoring. This can be addressed by building a network of multiple LiDAR sensors installed at various positions, increasing the number of points that can be acquired per frame.

However, this creates another problem: the limited network bandwidth of the LiDAR sensor network cannot support the real-time transmission of data from all the increased points. Previous research has proposed a data selection method that transmits data only from significant regions in 3D space to the server. However, these studies have not detailed how to accurately define and estimate these important regions within the point cloud.

To address this gap, a team of researchers led by masters-course student Kenta Azuma from the Graduate School of Electric Engineering and Computer Science at Shibaura Institute of Technology, developed a new method for accurately estimating important regions in a 3D sensor network.

"In this study, we utilized spatial features, which are created based on multiple spatial metrics, to estimate important regions. The important regions depend on the tasks. For example, for detecting accident-prone spots, the important regions are the spaces where moving objects, such as people and vehicles, are likely to be located. Our method accurately identifies such regions," explains Azuma.

The team also included Professor Ryoichi Shinkuma from Shibaura Institute of Technology, and Koichi Nihei and Takanori Iwai from NEC Corporation's Secure System Platform Research Laboratories. Their study was published in IEEE Sensor Journal on April 1, 2023.

The researchers divided the point cloud into small regions called voxels. The important regions were termed dynamic voxels, representing regions where people pass through. The other regions were called static voxels which encompassed regions with walls and ceilings through which people do not pass.

"To accurately estimate these important regions, it is necessary to use multiple spatial metrics to create spatial features (SFs). We used two types of spatial metrics to create SFs: the temporal metric and the statistical metric," details Azuma. The temporal metric is based on long-term changes in the number of points acquired by the LiDAR sensors over time, while the statistical metric represents the difference in the number of points per frame.

The team further evaluated the accuracy of estimating important regions using these metrics through experiments. They examined point cloud data acquired by multiple LiDAR sensors in three scenarios of people moving indoors and found that dynamic voxels could be identified with up to 10% more accuracy using both metrics compared to using either metric alone.

Additionally, they also employed machine learning to determine the best combination of threshold values that are used for classifying a dynamic voxel using the two metrics. Results revealed that the accuracy obtained using these threshold values was comparable to the optimal values used in the experiments. They also determined that increasing the size of the voxels from 1 meter to 1.25 meters degraded the accuracy.

The findings of the study highlight the utility of using multiple metrics for accurately estimating important regions. "Our research has the potential to significantly enhance the safety and efficiency of autonomous driving systems. For delivery robots, identifying spots with high collision or heavy congestion risks will enable the planning of efficient delivery routes, reducing times and costs. This can also help address the labor shortages in the logistics industry," Azuma concludes.

Overall, this innovative method promises to make smart cities safer and more efficient.

Elon Musk's X sued an advertising group and several large corporations on Tuesday accusing them of causing billions of dollars of losses by "illegally" boycotting the social media platform.

"We tried peace for 2 years, now it is war," the billionaire founder of Tesla and SpaceX said on X, which he acquired in late 2022.

The antitrust suit, filed in a federal court in Texas, targets the World Federation of Advertisers (WFA), Unilever, Mars, CVS Health and Orsted, a Danish energy company.

It accuses WFA, through an initiative known as the Global Alliance for Responsible Media (GARM), of conspiring with the companies and others to "collectively withhold billions of dollars in advertising revenue" from X, formerly Twitter.

A number of advertisers left Twitter following Musk's takeover amid concerns about the level of content moderation under the new ownership and Musk's own controversial musings on the site.

X CEO Linda Yaccarino, in a video posted on the platform on Tuesday, said X was the victim of a "systematic illegal boycott."

"They conspired to boycott X which threatens our ability to thrive in the future," Yaccarino said. "No small group of people should be able to monopolize what gets monetized."

X is seeking a jury trial and unspecified damages.

According to The New York Times, citing internal company documents, X earned $114 million in revenue in the United States in the second quarter of this year, down 25 percent from the first quarter and down 53 percent from the same period last year.

The lawsuit was filed one day after Musk filed suit in California against OpenAI, accusing its co-founders Sam Altman and Greg Brockman of betraying the artificial intelligence company's founding mission.

Musk invested in the San Francisco-based OpenAI in 2015 but left three years later.

He is accusing OpenAI, Altman and Brockman of fraud, conspiracy and false advertising.

Illustration by Cath Virginia / The VergeA federal judge has ruled that Google has an illegal monopoly in the US. “The market reality is that Google is the only real choice” as the default search engine, Judge Amit Mehta said in his decision, and he determined it had gotten that way unfairly. It’s a ruling that could portend big changes for the company, but we yet don’t know how big, and we might not for years.

Mehta declared on Monday that Google was liable for violating antitrust laws, vindicating the Department of Justice and a coalition of states that sued the tech giant in 2020. The next step — deciding on remedies for its illegal conduct — begins next month. Both parties must submit a proposed schedule for remedy proceedings by September 4th and then appear at a status conference on September 6th.

Google and the plaintiffs will spar over how severe its penalty should be, presenting experts and written testimony before Mehta issues another opinion and order. The exact timeline is unclear, though. William Kovacic, a former Federal Trade Commission chair and a professor at George Washington University, tells The Verge that he expects Judge Amit Mehta to hold a roughly weeklong hearing on remedies this year and believes the overall process could stretch to the end of 2024.

Rebecca Haw Allensworth, an antitrust professor at Vanderbilt University Law School, expects a fight that could take up to a year. “There’s going to be gnashing of teeth over the remedy, and that is going to make it take a long time,” Allensworth says.

A breakup is unlikely

There’s a wide range of potential remedies. The most dramatic would be breaking up Google to reduce its hold on search and online advertising, but it’s also perhaps the most unlikely, says Allensworth. Monday’s ruling was “a really dramatic win for the Biden administration, and it’s a really dramatic loss for Google, but it is not out-there,” Allensworth says. She thinks Mehta’s restraint is one of the “real strengths” of the opinion but that it indicates “I don’t think we would expect the remedy to then be really out-there.”

A milder remedy, which Kovacic finds most likely, is an injunction that “directs Google to cease the conduct that the court found to be improper.” But even that includes changes that could range from trivial to seismic. Mehta could demand Google modify its multibillion-dollar deals with companies like Apple and Mozilla, for instance, which cement it as the default search engine on products like the iPhone.

Allensworth notes another potential remedy would be requiring Google to share data or even some search algorithm information with other companies. “I think that that has the benefits of directly addressing some of the stuff that the judge is concerned about in his opinion,” she says. But Allensworth notes that “courts don’t like, for a variety of reasons, to force sharing between rivals.”

Whatever remedies the court ends up requiring, Google might not make them for a long time. Google has already said it will appeal the ruling. Appellate courts typically evaluate the liability and remedy rulings in the same proceeding, but Google could appeal a loss there to the Supreme Court, and it could seek an injunction to avoid any changes until the case is settled. (Apple got a yearslong reprieve from modifying its App Store rules in an antitrust battle with Epic.)

Kovacic tells The Verge that we could see a Supreme Court decision by the end of 2026. Other schedules are less optimistic; George Hay, a Cornell University law professor, gave The Associated Press a timeline of up to five years.

If one of these higher courts rules in favor of Google, the final outcome could depend on how the next president’s Justice Department responds. Microsoft, for instance, narrowly avoided being split up in the early 2000s — the incoming George W. Bush administration settled its predecessors’ case instead of pushing through an appeals court defeat. But in 2024, Republican nominee Donald Trump has a longtime grudge against Google and mused recently that it could be “shut down,” while VP and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris’ antitrust record is relatively sparse — but the Biden administration where she’s served has taken an aggressive stance on tech monopolies. Either one could decide to see the case through.

Whatever the outcome, this isn’t the only antitrust case, or even the only antitrust case against Google, on the horizon. Major litigation is pending against Apple, Amazon, and Meta. Google itself will face another trial in September — this time over its ad tech.

***WHY IS MATHEMATICS INDISPENSABLE FOR ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE?***

While artificial intelligence (AI) is perceived today as a subfield of computer science, many people are unaware that it is a highly interdisciplinary field that benefits massively from ideas from mathematics, as five mathematical societies have now jointly declared.

Five major mathematical societies have jointly agreed on a statement on the importance of mathematics for artificial intelligence (AI).

„A person who refuses to deal with arithmetic is doomed to talk nonsense". This sentence comes from John McCarthy, Professor of Artificial Intelligence and one of its founding fathers. While AI is now perceived as a subfield of computer science, many people do not realize that it is a highly interdisciplinary field that benefits massively from ideas from mathematics. Mathematics helps to increase the safety and efficiency of AI systems.

Four examples:

- Generative AI, which generates amazingly realistic images from simple text input, uses sophisticated mathematical concepts such as diffusion models based on stochastic differential equations.

- Modern AI systems are usually based on complex neural networks. It is now known that neural networks can be unstable: The smallest disturbances in the input data (e.g. so-called adversarial attacks) can lead to massive errors in the results. In practical applications such as autonomous driving or medical diagnostics, this poses a considerable safety risk. Mathematics is researching how such instabilities can be controlled by improving the design of neural networks.

- Neural networks in AI systems depend on millions and millions of parameters. This makes them opaque to us humans. The aim of mathematics is to develop more compact models that require fewer parameters for the same performance, are more transparent and therefore more explainable and also enable performance guarantees in critical applications.

- In order for neural networks to deliver the required performance, their parameters have to be trained at great computational expense. This consumes enormous energy resources. Forecasts assume that future AI systems worldwide will consume the electricity requirements of entire countries such as the Netherlands, Sweden or Argentina. By developing modern optimization methods, mathematics is making the training of neural networks more efficient and resource-saving.

Although it is often claimed that AI is a black box, all elements of AI can actually be explained with mathematical precision. This includes the statistical understanding of the data, the training objectives, the training methods and the network architectures. All of this allows us to understand the success of neural networks, for example. A sound mathematical education makes it possible to model training objectives in such a way that important aspects, such as security considerations, can be taken into account during training. In addition, abstract mathematical thinking allows solutions from certain application domains to be efficiently transferred to other areas. "All of this makes it clear that mathematics plays a key role in the development and understanding of AI," say the authors of the statement. Updates to Cohesity Data Cloud Simplify Threat Discovery and Mitigation, Enabling Customers to Recover from Incidents Quickly

Cohesity, a leader in AI-powered data security and management, today extended its first-mover advantage in GenAI detection and recovery capabilities with the addition of significant new enhancements to the Cohesity Data Cloud. These improvements allow customers to use Cohesityâ€™s built-in AI capabilities to rapidly detect, investigate, and address potential threats within their environment, enabling them to restore operations far more quickly. New enhancements to Cohesityâ€™s threat detection, data security posture, and cyber recovery assistant tool, and a new clean room design environment, provide customers with a guided incident response wizard so they can move from alert to recovery confidently and efficiently. As cyber threats such as ransomware continue to proliferate, organizations are handicapped by a lack of expertise in responding to these threats. According to theâ World Economic Forumâ€™s 2024 Global Cybersecurity Outlook, 36% of executives said that skills gaps are the main challenge they face in achieving their cyber-resilience goals. The Cohesity Data Cloud updates solve a very real and vexing industry challenge: constrained by IT budgets and cybersecurity expertise shortages, organizations need comprehensive data security, management, and recovery solutions that simplify the process of identifying actionable threats and events, mitigating issues, and recovering quickly from incidents.

To aid these customers, Cohesity enhanced its AI-powered cyber recovery assistant tool for the Cohesity Data Cloud, providing expert guidance on the appropriate response. Using security context as input to GenAI and complementing this multiple sources including threat hunting scans, ransomware detection, data risk and posture, among others, customers can receive an alert to anomalous behaviors. They are then able to have a conversation to assess the impact of the anomaly and correlate events, and get direction on the right next steps on investigation and any remediation that could be neededâ€“all from within the wizard without the need for specialized cyber response expertise. This expert guidance helps give customers a better understanding of the anomaly and its impact and enables them to engage the Security Operations team with confidence for a timely incident response so companies can quickly return to normal business operations.

77% of global companies surveyed want to grow revenues through AI. Survey reveals that companies' average AI investment planned this year is nearlyâ $50M

Cognizant (NASDAQ: CTSH) has released a companion analysis to its comprehensive 2023â studyâ with Oxford Economics, and the new report – titled “New Work, New World: Quantifying Global Genâ AI Momentum” – outlines cautious optimism is driving current market adoption of generative AI across various industries and geographies.

Key findings from the survey reveal that the greatest strategic priority for generative AI adoption is enhancing productivity. Additionally, an impressive 76% of businesses are looking to leverage the technology to create new revenue streams, while 58% are incorporating revenue increases into their business cases.

In terms of readiness and business cases, the companies surveyed indicated that they plan to invest an average of $47.5 million in generative AI this financial year. Most funding is expected to come from IT and technology budgets, with contributions also from marketing and R&D. Furthermore, the survey highlights a commitment to workforce transformation, with 54% of companies planning to upskill workers to address skills gaps and 44% seeking to transition displaced workers to new roles.

Despite the enthusiasm for adopting generative AI, businesses also recognize the challenges of scaling the technology. Only 26% of companies have implemented cross-enterprise use cases, and there is widespread concern that delays in adoption could give competitors an advantage. Globally, 70% of companies say they are not moving fast enough while 82% suggest that same delay in execution could place them at a competitive disadvantage. The data also points to the need for outside expertise to help with AI adoption, with 43% of companies indicating they plan to work with external consultants to develop a plan for generative AI.

Cognizant CEO Ravi Kumar S said, “With our prior study predicting that generative AI tools could inject nearlyâ $1 trillionâ into the U.S. economy and even more globally over ten years, it is not surprising that our latest survey identified gen AI as a core source of potential growth for most companies. Simultaneously we see a cautious approach in adopting this technology, as executives around the world are looking for experts to help them traverse the AI productivity-to-growth journey.”

The survey, conducted in June 2024, includes insights from 2,200 executives spanning 23 countries and 15 industries, offering a view of how leaders plan to integrate generative AI into their businesses with the goal of driving significant productivity gains and growth. The analysis introduces a “momentum score,” derived from analyzing factors that could either inhibit or accelerate business adoption of generative AI within each country, from the regulatory environment and local infrastructure to the cost of capital and talent availability. North America leads with a momentum score 15% above the global baseline and indicating a bullish outlook, while EMEA and APAC trail behind at -4% and -14 respectively, indicating a more cautious approach.

Cognizant's “New Work, New World: Quantifying Global Genâ AI Momentum” survey serves as a pivotal resource for understanding the current landscape and future potential of generative AI, providing valuable insights for businesses aiming to harness the power of this transformative technology for productivity and growth. The initial 2023 “New Work, New World” report predicted that generative AI could injectâ $1 trillionâ into the U.S. economy over the next decade. The newly released survey is the first look at global geographies and the potential business impact of generative AI.

Methodology of the survey: Cognizant partnered with Oxford Economics to design and conduct a survey of 2,200 C-suite and senior executives, including individuals at the C-suite and VP levels, from large corporations around the world. The focus was on those who play a significant role in shaping, contributing to or making final decisions on their organization's generative AI strategy. The survey was conducted inâ June 2024â via computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI).

United States District judge Amit Mehta ruled on Monday that Google has unlawfully maintained its dominance in search by using anticompetitive deals to keep rivals from gaining traction. And without fear of pressure from competitors, Google has been able to charge whatever it wants for search ads, he said.

“The trial evidence firmly established that Google’s monopoly power, maintained by the exclusive distribution agreements, has enabled Google to increase text ads prices without any meaningful competitive constraint,” Mehta wrote in a 286-page ruling. “Unconstrained price increases have fueled Google’s dramatic revenue growth and allowed it to maintain high and remarkably stable operating profits.”

His findings are arguably the most comprehensive modern examination of Google’s search business, which over the past 26 years has become a $175 billion annual revenue behemoth that accounts for much of parent company Alphabet’s profits. Google will appeal, as it risks losing its prominent placement on iPhones and other gateways to the web.

Kent Walker, Google’s president of global affairs, said in a statement that the company would fight the ruling because it “recognizes that Google offers the best search engine, but concludes that we shouldn’t be allowed to make it easily available.”

United States Attorney General Merrick Garland called the decision “an historic win.” Assistant Attorney General Jonathan Kanter said it “paves the path for innovation for generations to come.”

The ruling follows a weeks-long trial in Mehta’s courtroom last year in Washington, DC, in which the US Department of Justice alleged that Google had become the world’s most used search engine by paying partners such as Apple and Samsung to promote it on their devices and software. Google had attributed its success to providing the best service and argued that it faced significant competition from the likes of Microsoft and others.

Mehta sided with Google on some issues but rejected its overall argument that the company held no illegal monopoly whatsoever. Last year, a jury in federal court in San Francisco ruled Google’s Play app store an illegal monopolist.

The ways in which Google will have to adjust its business in light of the judgments in San Francisco and Washington are yet to be determined. Mehta will hold a separate trial to determine remedies in the search case, and a judge is mulling proposed penalties in the Play litigation. But some changes Google has made in response to antitrust scrutiny in recent years have been costly.

First Trial

The case before Mehta traced back to the increased oversight of the tech industry under then president Donald Trump. The Justice Department sued Google in 2020 before Trump left office, and the lawsuit became the first of several against Big Tech companies to go to trial.

Mehta ruled that Google, with about 90 percent market share, has monopoly power in both general search and general search text ads. He found that Google’s deals with partners harm competition and that Google hadn’t shown otherwise.

Add in Google’s Chrome browser, and roughly 70 percent of queries flows through portals in which Google is the default search engine. As of 2017, Google attributed an estimated 54 percent of its overall search revenue to default placements.

In exchange for default status, Google shares revenue with partners. Apple receives the highest amount—an estimated $20 billion from Google in 2022—under a deal that runs through 2026. Rivals have been unable to match those payments, and would-be competitors have no reason to take on Google. “The prospect of losing tens of billions in guaranteed revenue from Google—which presently come at little to no cost to Apple—disincentivizes Apple from launching its own search engine when it otherwise has built the capacity to do so,” Mehta wrote.

Meanwhile, Google has been able to routinely increase revenue by adjusting the auction system through which it sells search ads. The company has made those changes with no care to what rivals such as Microsoft are doing, and some of the adjustments have even led to less transparency and benefits for advertisers, according to Mehta’s findings.

“The only apparent constraint on Google’s pricing decisions are potential advertiser outcry and bad publicity,” Mehta wrote. But Google has been deliberate to make those changes “barely perceptible and rarely announced,” and the company “has suffered no consequences because it does not operate in a competitive text ads market.”

The ruling drew inspiration from a district court judgment in the government’s case against Microsoft in the late 1990s, which found that company's efforts to boost its Internet Explorer browser and stymie rivals were unlawful. A later settlement contributed to the proliferation of new browsers such as Google’s Chrome.

In his decision on Monday, Mehta declined to rule that Google held monopoly power in the more general search ads market. He found Google didn’t have pricing power in product ads, which include images and compete more directly with ads on Amazon and social media.

In a loss for attorneys general of 38 states that had joined the case, Mehta ruled that Google hadn’t unlawfully denied Microsoft access to a key service that advertisers use to buy search ads. Colorado attorney general Phil Weiser, who led that part of the case, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether he would appeal.

Mehta also rejected the government’s request to sanction Google for failing to preserve internal communications related to search projects. The judge said any additional evidence wouldn’t have changed his ruling. “The court’s decision not to sanction Google should not be understood as condoning Google’s failure to preserve chat evidence,” Mehta wrote. “Google avoided sanctions in this case. It may not be so lucky in the next one.”

SaveSave this storySaveStarting Monday, Zoom users will have the option to open a document tool from within their video calling app and create sharable files based on their meetings—but they’ll also be prompted to use generative AI to help them write and edit them. This new feature, essentially Zoom’s version of Google Docs, is the latest effort to compete with Microsoft and Google to become an everything workplace for businesses.

The docs feature Zoom’s AI Companion, a generative tool built on LLM models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, and the company's own models, unveiled last fall. It can take a meeting transcript and organize it into templates, or make tables, checklists, and trackers to organize processes and tasks. The docs can then be integrated to Zoom meetings for sharing and editing.

“AI is what makes the experience so differentiated,” says Smita Hashim, chief product officer at Zoom. “The goal is that the mundane high-friction tasks, which take up so much of our time, can be done by AI.”

Zoom docs are the company’s latest update to its collaborative tool Workplace, which came out in March. It’s an attempt to attract customers in a crowded market: Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 dominate the space, and have already added their own AI features to tools and to their laptops.

The market is “extremely difficult to compete in,” says Will McKeon-White, senior analyst of infrastructure and operations at research firm Forrester, but not impossible—Google Docs has thrived in a world where Microsoft Word once reigned. Google Workspace has more than 3 billion users, while Microsoft Teams has more than 320 million monthly active users.

In this case, Zoom is betting that the price will matter: Its Workplace plans include the company’s AI Companion at no extra cost (Zoom Workplace costs between $14 and $19 dollars per user per month for smaller companies. Microsoft’s Copilot for 365 add-on costs $30 per user per month, and Gemini for business from Google costs between $20 and $30 per user per month in addition to base costs for the service).

Gemini can also help users brainstorm in Google Docs, create images, and summarize and refine text. And Copilot can work across Word, PowerPoint, and Excel to analyze information, rewrite information, and create presentations.

Persuading businesses to move from one workplace tech provider to another is challenging, and Zoom may be banking on the fact that many organizations already use Zoom alongside another provider, leaving them open to a switch. Zoom has been looking for the next big thing that could replicate its rapid growth during the Covid-19 lockdowns, as people worked via Zoom and even attended Zoom weddings. In early 2023, the company hit a tipping point—the number of clients that were willing to pay for Zoom had already done so, and fewer people were turning to it for “fun” Zoom calls with family or friends.

The company dropped off the Nasdaq 100 at the end of 2023, and its share price is down nearly 90 percent from its 2020 high. Zoom laid off about 15 percent of its staff in early 2023, but—seemingly aware that it needed to expand—began integrating more calendar features and added cartoon avatars. Zoom has recently also seen growth in its Contact Center, a customer service channel for businesses. But to compete with bundled services like Google and Microsoft that also offer video calls, it needs to do more.

Zoom also expanded its workflow automation tool in July, which sends automated and recurring reminders tied to meetings and regularly scheduled tasks, like summary notes and project updates.

But the end goal of Zoom is bigger: In June, Eric S. Yuan, CEO and founder of Zoom, painted a vision of the future to The Verge where AI-driven digital twins stand in for people during meetings and read and respond to emails. Yuan’s future of work is one where we work less, thanks to AI. (Yuan did not specify whether Zoom is currently working on digital twins.)

For now, one of the biggest challenges for workplace tech to solve is the chaotic nature of notifications; from emails, chats, phone calls, and various places to store documents, workers are overwhelmed and wasting time digging data up. This is where AI could help, and that’s easier done if that information lives within one company’s software, McKeon-White says.

Zoom’s growing platform has “good potential,” says Adam Holtby, a principal analyst of workplace transformation for research firm Omdia says, particularly among frontline workers who have not traditionally been targeted by Google or Microsoft and are not tied to desks, and who are ripe for digital disruption and in need of tech solutions.

But making transformative changes in AI at work will take huge investment in capital and employee training. Companies want to be on the forefront of AI, but some leaders have provided little guidance to workers. The impact of that investment may not be clear until later this decade.

Zoom needs to “continue in broadening out its AI capabilities,” says Holtby, to show that its tools should be prioritized and are worth the investment. Amid the AI hype cycle, normalizing AI use among a broad swath of workers will still take time.

In the world of artificial intelligence (AI), a battle is underway. On one side are companies that believe in keeping the datasets and algorithms behind their advanced software private and confidential. On the other are companies that believe in allowing the public to see what's under the hood of their sophisticated AI models.

Think of this as the battle between open- and closed-source AI.

In recent weeks, Meta, the parent company of Facebook, took up the fight for open-source AI in a big way by releasing a new collection of large AI models. These include a model named Llama 3.1 405B, which Meta's founder and chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg, says is "the first frontier-level open source AI model."

For anyone who cares about a future in which everybody can access the benefits of AI, this is good news.

**The Danger Of Closed-source AI—and The Promise Of Open-source AI**

Though anyone can use these products, there is no way to find out what dataset and source codes have been used to build the AI model or tool.

While this is a great way for companies to protect their intellectual property and their profits, it risks undermining public trust and accountability. Making AI technology closed-source also slows down innovation and makes a company or other users dependent on a single platform for their AI needs. This is because the platform that owns the model controls changes, licensing and updates.

There are a range of ethical frameworks that seek to improve the fairness, accountability, transparency, privacy and human oversight of AI. However, these principles are often not fully achieved with closed-source AI due to the inherent lack of transparency and external accountability associated with proprietary systems.

In the case of ChatGPT, its parent company, OpenAI, releases neither the dataset nor code of its latest AI tools to the public. This makes it impossible for regulators to audit it. And while access to the service is free, concerns remain about how users' data are stored and used for retraining models.

By contrast, the code and dataset behind open-source AI models is available for everyone to see.

This fosters rapid development through community collaboration and enables the involvement of smaller organizations and even individuals in AI development. It also makes a huge difference for small and medium size enterprises as the cost of training large AI models is colossal.

Perhaps most importantly, open source AI allows for scrutiny and identification of potential biases and vulnerability.

However, open-source AI does create new risks and ethical concerns.

For example, quality control in open source products is usually low. As hackers can also access the code and data, the models are also more prone to cyberattacks and can be tailored and customized for malicious purposes, such as retraining the model with data from the dark web.

**An Open-source AI Pioneer**

Among all leading AI companies, Meta has emerged as a pioneer of open-source AI. With its new suite of AI models, it is doing what OpenAI promised to do when it launched in December 2015—namely, advancing digital intelligence "in the way that is most likely to benefit humanity as a whole," as OpenAI said back then.

Llama 3.1 405B is the largest open-source AI model in history. It is what's known as a large language model, capable of generating human language text in multiple languages. It can be downloaded online but because of its huge size, users will need powerful hardware to run it.

While it does not outperform other models across all metrics, Llama 3.1 405B is considered highly competitive and does perform better than existing closed-source and commercial large language models in certain tasks, such as reasoning and coding tasks.

But the new model is not fully open, because Meta hasn't released the huge data set used to train it. This is a significant "open" element that is currently missing.

Nonetheless, Meta's Llama levels the playing field for researchers, small organizations and startups because it can be leveraged without the immense resources required to train large language models from scratch.

**Shaping The Future Of AI**

To ensure AI is democratized, we need three key pillars:

Governance: regulatory and ethical frameworks to ensure AI technology is being developed and used responsibly and ethically.

Accessibility: affordable computing resources and user-friendly tools to ensure a fair landscape for developers and users.

Openness: datasets and algorithms to train and build AI tools should be open source to ensure transparency.

Achieving these three pillars is a shared responsibility for government, industry, academia and the public. The public can play a vital role by advocating for ethical policies in AI, staying informed about AI developments, using AI responsibly and supporting open-source AI initiatives.

But several questions remain about open-source AI. How can we balance protecting intellectual property and fostering innovation through open-source AI? How can we minimize ethical concerns around open-source AI? How can we safeguard open-source AI against potential misuse?

Properly addressing these questions will help us create a future where AI is an inclusive tool for all. Will we rise to the challenge and ensure AI serves the greater good? Or will we let it become another nasty tool for exclusion and control? The future is in our hands.

The explosive growth of AI "chatbots" over the last few years and their ability to generate text that simulates human writing, often very accurately, has focused attention on how text is structured.

One useful way of analyzing text is to think of it as a network, and methods of network analysis that are familiar to mathematicians and computer scientists can be powerful in linguistics.

Network theory can be used in different ways to model the relationship between words in a block of text, linking analytical patterns to coherence and to some more subjective aspects of writing quality.

Davi Alves Oliveira and Hernane Borges de Barros Pereira from the University of Bahia State, Bahia, Brazil have compared five methods of representing sentences as networks, showing that each has value for specific applications. This analysis has now been published in The European Physical Journal B.

Their research focuses on a property of text called cohesion, which is essentially what makes a block of text work as a whole, rather than a collection of random sentences. Its cohesion is largely built up from the relationships between words. "Imagine a text as like a map, with words as cities... [and] we connect words based on how they relate to each other," explains Oliveira. "This lets us explore how language users strategically choose words to build a cohesive structure."

Network theory is based around nodes connected by edges that define the relationships between them. Oliveira and Pereira present five different ways of defining these nodes and edges in text, and then use network analysis tools to measure the strength and pattern of the connections.

In some models, individual words are replaced as nodes by lemmas, or base words (so "text" would represent both "texts" and "textual") and/or linking words like "and" or "the" removed; edges might connect consecutive words, or words in the same sentence.

"This [analysis] allows us to see how word choices influence each other and contribute to the overall meaning and structure of the text," adds Oliveira.

Coherence, and also more subjective aspects of writing quality like clarity and flow, can be linked to network patterns. This suggests that the researchers' analyses may have practical applications for language teachers, writers and translators.

***GERMAN CHIP MAKER INFINEON TO CUT 1,400 JOBS***

Infineon said recovery in its target markets was progressing slowly.

German chip maker Infineon said Monday it will slash 1,400 jobs and relocate 1,400 more due to a tough market environment, as it announced falling profits and downgraded its outlook.

The job cuts, from a workforce of about 58,600 worldwide, are part of a company-wide restructuring that was launched in May.

The program is aimed at "strengthening our competitiveness", said CEO Jochen Hanebeck in a statement, alongside the release of results for the third quarter of the group's financial year.

A spokesman confirmed to AFP that the jobs would be cut and relocated to locations with lower costs, without giving further details.

The news comes after US chip giant Intel announced last week it will slash more than 15 percent of its workforce as it seeks to cut about $20 billion in expenses this year.

Infineon reported a net profit of 403 million euros ($441 million) in the three months to the end of June, down 52 percent from a year earlier.

Revenues came in at 3.7 billion euros, down from about 4.1 billion a year earlier.

The group downgraded its outlook for 2024, and now expects revenues of around 15 billion euros. That is the third downgrade in recent times, with Infineon having earlier expected sales of about 16 billion euros.

"The recovery in our target markets is progressing only slowly," said Hanebeck.

He referred to "prolonged weak economic momentum" but insisted that Infineon continues to "hold up well" in a "challenging" market environment.

Revenues in its "green industrial power" and "power and sensor systems" divisions fell heavily in the quarter from a year earlier but sales in its automotive division were stable.

Quand une mise à jour Crowdstrike révèle les failles du monopole de Microsoft.

Vendredi 19 juillet, un bug mondial a planté des millions d’ordinateurs Windows après une mise à jour. Chose incroyable, la mise à jour ne vient pas de Microsoft, mais d’une entreprise de cybersécurité Crowdstrike.

Avec beaucoup de stupéfaction, des entreprises ont compris leur mortelle dépendance à un acteur monopolistique, capable de mettre à l’arrêt leur business du jour au lendemain. Chaque jour, ils demandent à Microsoft de bien vouloir s’allumer.

Sans la moindre stupéfaction, Microsoft s’est rappelé qu’il détient un monopole avec un produit bancal. Chaque jour, il demande aux parties tierces présentes sur Windows (telle Crowdstrike) de bien vouloir démarrer.

Une question de logiciel

Idéalement, le cœur de l’OS appelé kernel ne doit pas être obstrué par des applications tierces. Si le module Bluetooth plante, l’ordinateur reste utilisable. Si un antivirus plante au démarrage, ce n’est pas critique pour l’OS, il doit pouvoir continuer le démarrage.

Ce n’est pas le cas sur Windows, et ce n’est pas le premier défaut de conception de l’OS. Windows a été conçu en considérant tout logiciel tiers comme fiable et honnête. Ce bug est la conséquence de ce paradigme initial que Microsoft tente de colmater.

Les virus avaient plein pouvoir avant qu’un système de droit administratif demande à l’utilisateur de confirmer certaines actions depuis Windows Vista.

Si une seule application plantait, l’écran et l’OS se figeaient avant Windows 7, qui donna la priorité aux actions de l’OS avant celle des applications tierces (session 0 isolation).

Windows n’a pas été conçu pour faire tourner le monde. Microsoft le sait, il apporte quelque changement au fil des ans, mais surtout, il se dédouane de la mauvaise conception de son OS.

L’entreprise n’hésite pas à pointer du doigt l’Union européenne, qui l’a poussé à ouvrir davantage son OS. Ce n’est pas l’UE qui a codé Windows avec ses failles béantes. On peut très bien être ouvert et fiable comme Linux.

L'éternelle irresponsable

Microsoft s’est toujours comportée comme n’étant pas responsable de ses produits ou décisions, et avec un certain succès.

À commencer, par sa position de monopole sur les ordinateurs personnels et les suites bureautiques. Apple essuie des défaites juridiques le forçant à proposer des AppStores alternatifs sur iPhone. Google doit proposer des alternatifs au navigateur Google Chrome sur Android.

Microsoft jouit d’une totale impunité. Personne ne semble lui demander d’ouvrir Windows et Office afin que des logiciels Windows ou des documents Offices puissent fonctionner sur des alternatives pleinement compatibles. Même son investissement massif dans OpenIA n’a pas levé le moindre bouclier.

Pourtant les .docx, .xlsx et .pptx pourraient faire l’objet d’un standard ouvert comme c’est le cas du .pdf pourtant créé par l’entreprise privée Adobe pour ses produits.

Avant Windows 10 et son Windows Defender, l’entreprise de Palo Alto avait la réputation d’avoir un produit peu sécurisé. Différentes études montraient qu’un ordinateur Windows neuf, déballé, branché à internet se faisait pirater en 4 minutes.

Sans parler des nombreuses failles planétaires comme EternelBlue (2017), Double Kill (2018), BlueKeep (2019), SMBGhost (2020), PrintNightmare (2021) ou Follina (2022).

Aucun système n’est sûr, mais tous les systèmes n’ont pas des failles critiques utilisables sur des millions d’appareils chaque année.

Question de confidentialité

Surtout que pour réparer ses failles, il faut mettre à jour rapidement l’OS avec les conséquences que l’on a vu récemment.

Microsoft, c’est aussi un rapport à la vie privée de plus en plus douteux. Windows envoie par défaut tous vos documents en local dans son cloud.

Dernièrement, l’entreprise a dévoilé sa prochaine fonctionnalité appelée Recall, votre écran sera constamment enregistré et analysé par une IA afin de mieux vous connaître.

Tout cela semble loin du RGPD. Le consentement n’est pas formel, puisque les fonctionnalités sont activées par défaut. Les données sont traitées sur des serveurs américains. Encore une fois, Microsoft ne semble inquiétée par personne.

En conclusion, Windows n’a jamais été conçu pour faire tourner des logiciels critiques. Microsoft vous vend son produit, récupère vos données et vous laisse ses problèmes pour lesquels elle se déresponsabilise.

Demain, si 95 % des voitures dans le monde sont des Renault – on peut rêver – à chaque panne, on nous expliquera que Renault n'est pas fiable. Même si la marque ne l'est pas moins que les marques qui se partagent les derniers 5 %.

Et vous savez ce qu'on dit sur Apple : si Apple vendait des voitures, elles ne pourraient rouler que sur des routes Apple avec de l'essence Apple.

La sécurité de Windows est un vaste chantier, toujours ouvert, mais en amélioration constante. Le problème de la sécurité, encore plus en informatique, c'est que « sécuriser », ça signifie ajouter des contraintes. Et quand on a pris l'habitude de vivre dans un monde « open bar », l'ajout d'une contrainte est insupportable.

En pratique, concernant la faille présentée ici : il s'agit d'une suite de sécurité. Pour ces logiciels, Microsoft a effectivement l'obligation de rendre accessible le niveau le plus sécurisé de l'OS, pour permettre la concurrence. Microsoft peut-il être tenu pour responsable si un de ses concurrents fait des âneries avec ce pouvoir qui lui est donné ? En ce qui me concerne, c'est douteux, les possibilités qu'aurait l'OS dans un tel cas sont soit de refuser de démarrer (ce qui s'est produit), soit d'accepter de démarre en désactivant le logiciel fautif. Imaginez-vous qu'un système Windows démarre en décidant de désactiver une suite de sécurité ? Vous pouvez me dire : « ils peuvent le démarrer en mode local en désactivant le réseau ». Ben non, ils ne peuvent pas : une bonne quantité de serveurs tournent sur cet OS, les démarrer de cette manière aurait le même effet que ne pas les démarrer du tout. Voire pire : il empêcherait toute récupération.

Concernant les reproches généraux : Microsoft n'a pas à ouvrir Office, les formats utilisés par ces suites sont aussi ouverts que les formats utilisés par les dérivés d'OpenOffice (voir norme ISO/CEI 29500) – même si, dans la mesure où l'entreprise essaie d'assurer une compatibilité ascendante avec des versions qui ont parfois 30 ans, l'implémentation n'est pas toujours parfaite. Pour l'OS, il a toujours été possible d'installer un logiciel depuis n'importe quelle source sur Windows, l'entreprise essaie, pour des raisons de sécurité et de contrôle, de réduire cette possibilité mais elle est très surveillée sur ce point. Ce n'était pas le cas chez Apple, raison pour laquelle ils ont été sanctionnés.

En réponse au récent lancement de Microsoft Designer, Canva réalise une acquisition stratégique en mettant la main sur Leonardo.AI, une start-up spécialisée dans la création de contenus graphiques par IA générative.

Fondé en 2022, Leonardo.AI compte déjà 19 millions d'utilisateurs. Dans notre top 10 des meilleures IA génératives gratuites, l’outil s’en était sorti honorablement. Canva, l'éditeur australien fort de ses 100 millions d'utilisateurs mensuels, renforce ainsi son portefeuille technologique après avoir déjà acquis Kaleido et Affinity.

« Grâce à l'incroyable modèle de fondation de Leonardo.AI et à son équipe de 120 experts, cette acquisition renforce notre capacité à dynamiser notre gamme de produits d'IA tout en investissant dans la recherche et l'innovation« , déclare Canva dans un communiqué. L'intégration de la technologie de Leonardo.AI, et notamment de son modèle Phoenix, dans Magic Studio et Magic Media de Canva, promet d'enrichir l'expérience utilisateur avec des outils de génération d'images et de vidéos encore plus performants.

Leonardo.AI continuera d'opérer de manière indépendante tout en étant intégré à la plateforme Canva, élargissant ainsi l'accès à ses outils à une nouvelle communauté de créateurs. CASE ALLEGATIONS: CrowdStrike is a global cybersecurity company that provides software that helps prevent data breaches. According to the complaint, CrowdStrike's main product is the Falcon software platform, which purportedly uses artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies to detect, prevent, and respond to security breach threats.

The CrowdStrike class action lawsuit alleges that defendants throughout the Class Period made false and/or misleading statements and/or failed to disclose that: (i) CrowdStrike had instituted deficient controls in its procedure for updating Falcon and was not properly testing updates to Falcon before rolling them out to customers; (ii) this inadequate software testing created a substantial risk that an update to Falcon could cause major outages for a significant number of CrowdStrike's customers; and (iii) such outages could pose, and in fact ultimately created, substantial reputational harm and legal risk to CrowdStrike.

The CrowdStrike class action lawsuit further alleges that on July 19, 2024, news broke that a flawed Falcon content update caused major worldwide technology outages for millions of devices running Microsoft Windows. Then, on July 22, 2024, the CrowdStrike class action lawsuit further alleges that Congress called on CrowdStrike CEO, defendant George Kurtz, to testify regarding the crisis and CrowdStrike's stock rating was downgraded by analysts such as Guggenheim and BTIG. On this news, the price of CrowdStrike stock fell more than 13%, according to the complaint.

Finally, on July 29, 2024, news outlets reported that Delta Air Lines had hired prominent attorney David Boies to seek damages from CrowdStrike following the software outage, according to the complaint. On this news, the price of CrowdStrike stock fell nearly 10%, according to the CrowdStrike class action lawsuit.

THE LEAD PLAINTIFF PROCESS: The Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995 permits any investor who purchased or acquired CrowdStrike Class A common stock during the Class Period to seek appointment as lead plaintiff in the CrowdStrike class action lawsuit. AI technologies create less demand for human knowledge — and they put a premium on human wisdom.

Today the workforce is getting older, and the number of younger workers in positions of senior management is growing. These two developments might appear to spell trouble, in that they seem to set the generations against one another, but the author of this article argues that in fact they represent an important opportunity: If companies can figure out how to enable the intergenerational transfer of the wisdom that comes with age and experience, they can strengthen themselves — and the workplace as a whole.

AI technologies create less demand for human knowledge — and they put a premium on human wisdom.

We’re in the midst of two enormous demographic shifts in the workplace that seem to be at odds with each other. We’re living longer and working longer — either by choice or necessity. In the last century, the 65+ age group has grown five times faster than the rest of the population and, by 2031, according to a recent Bain & Co. estimate, employees 55 and older will constitute a quarter of the global workforce. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly half of the increase in the number of people participating in the U.S. labor force between 2016 and 2026 is attributable to those 60 and older.
